این کتاب برای نخستین بار به ریشه‌شناسی فعل‌های فارسی به‌صورت فرهنگ یک جلدی می‌پردازد. شایان یادآوری است که پیش از این جز اندک افراد متخصص، حتی گاهی دست‌اندرکاران زبان فارسی ریشه و ریشه‌شناسی را برای زبان فارسی تقریباً کار نشدنی می‌دانستند و می‌پنداشتند که تنها زبان عربی است که دارای ریشه است. در این اثر افعال فارسی و مشتقات آن ارائه می‌گردد و صورت تاریخی آنها از فارسی میانه و دیگر زبان‌های ایرانی میانه گرفته تا صورت ایرانی باستان گزارش می‌شود. آنگاه ریشۀ باستانی افعال فارسی با تکیه بر زبان اوستایی و فارسی باستان، حتی سنسکریت و مقایسه آنها با برخی از زبان‌های اروپایی باستان مانند یونانی، لاتین، اسلاوی و ژرمنی پیوند نزدیکی را در میان این زبان‌ها به نمایش می‌گذارد. سپس برابرنهاده‌های افعال فارسی به زبان‌های ایرانی میانۀ شرقی و غربی و زبان‌های دورۀ نو مانند پشتو، بلوچی، آسی و کردی، همچنین تداومِ ساخت کلمه و مشتقات و معادل‌ها را در درازنای تاریخی و دگرگونی آوایی و معنایی آنها یادآور می‌شود. ارزش دیگر اثر در ارائۀ شاهد‌مثال برای صورت مصدر، ماضی و مضارع با ارجاع دقیق به 120 متن کهن زبان فارسی است. Preface The etymological form of Persian verbs has been studied in the book. The book consists of introduction, corpus of Persian verbs, the bibliographies and the indexes of main Iranian archaic languages. The introduction deals with Persian, Iranian studies, past and feature outlook on the Iranian linguistic and dialectology. The corpus of Persian verbs discusses the followings: Persian verbs have been selected from about 120 Persian classic texts as the data base, and thy have formed corpus of entries of the work. Each entry is formed from infinitive with Persian meaning(s), past stem, and present stem. All stems accompanied by examples from the selected texts. The forms of the verbs are given in the Middle Persian (and so on) and Old Iranian (Old Persian, Avestan and Sanskrit), and their roots of Indo-European. The equivalents of Persian verbs in the Middle Iranian, namely Middle Persian (Zoroastrian, Manichaean, and occasionally Christian Versions), and Parthian in the west group of Iranian languages are also given, and in the east group of Iranian languages, lit. Sogdian, Khwarezmian, Saka, and Bakhtarian are given too. Finally, the other New Iranian languages and dialects, such as Ossetian, Pashto, Baluchi, Kurdish, and so on for example are also mentioned. In the bibliography section the Persian texts and scours are gathered. Also European scours (In English, French, Germany, and Russia) are given separately. The indexes only for some important Iranian Languages such as Persian, Middle Persian (generally), Parthian, Old Persian, Avestan, Old Iranian, and Indo-European words are listed.
